Google India laid off 453 employees across departments on Thursday. According to media reports, a mail on the same was sent out to affected employees by Sanjay Gupta, Country Head and VP, Google India.
In January, Google CEO Sundar Pichai had said that the company is going to layoff 12,000 employees. Through an internal mail, Pichai had told his employees that the company had expanded its headcount rapidly in preparation of a “different economic reality”.
But the layoffs in India are yet to be confirmed for their association with the global job cuts from the company.
In the second week of 2023, multiple reports pointed to Alphabet Inc's health science unit, Verily Life Sciences, laying off over 200 employees, or about 15 per cent of its workforce, marking the first time in at least six years when Alphabet or its affiliate had announced job cuts.
In a blog, Pichai wrote, "To the Googlers who are leaving us: Thank you for working so hard to help people and businesses everywhere. Your contributions have been invaluable and we are grateful for them."
Google had said that the employees who are being cut will be paid during the full notification period (minimum 60 days). It said that the company would also offer a severance package starting at 16 weeks salary plus two weeks for every additional year at Google, and accelerate at least 16 weeks of GSU vesting.
