Expedia Group announced late Monday that it has begun informing 1,500 employees that they will be laid off "in light of the company's organisational and technological transformation."
According to a WARN letter, 208 Expedia Group employees in Seattle's headquarters will be laid off. The layoffs are slated to begin on 1 May. The cutbacks will also affect 64 jobs in Austin, Texas, with some of these likely coming from Expedia's Vrbo unit.
Expedia Group had 17,100 employees by the end of 2023, thus the new layoffs represent around 8.7 per cent of the workforce.
According to the Expedia Group statement, the business would incur pre-tax charges and cash expenditures of $80 million to $100 million in 2024 as a result of restructuring efforts. The corporation stated that the majority of this is due to severance and other benefits compensation charges.
Expedia conducted at least two waves of layoffs in 2023, including one in October that affected approximately 100 employees.
