According to a report from The Economic Times, Apple's ecosystem in India has contributed to the direct employment of more than 1,50,000 individuals since the launch of the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for smartphones in August 2021. This has solidified Apple's position as the leading creator of blue-collar jobs in the country. The majority of these employees are young, first-time job seekers aged between 19 and 24.
Additionally, the report highlights that approximately 3,00,000 indirect jobs have been generated as a result of Apple's presence in India. The company currently employs nearly 3,000 people directly, with its iOS app development supporting over 1 million jobs in the country. Apple's focus on India, the world's second-largest smartphone market, comes amidst geopolitical tensions and market fluctuations in the US and China.
Since commencing iPhone manufacturing in India in 2017 under the PLI scheme, Apple has collaborated with suppliers to increase local assembly of the latest iPhone models and produce a greater number of components domestically. This initiative has led to the creation of over 77,000 direct jobs by the three contract manufacturers, namely Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron.
Moreover, the rapidly expanding supplier ecosystem associated with Apple has generated more than 70,000 new direct jobs. Key contributors to job creation among Apple suppliers include Tata Electronics, Salcomp Technologies, Foxlink, and Sunwoda. Other significant job creators include Avary Technologies, CCL Industries, and Flex. In support of this burgeoning ecosystem, Apple has recently launched a women's health educational program as part of its $50-million Supplier Employee Development Fund.
