Apple has begun letting contractors go over the past few days, according to some media reports. The reports suggest that the iPhone-maker has cut ties with hundreds of contractors.
These contractors are workers that are employed by outside agencies who work with Apple employees on projects.
The news of Apple firing contractors comes even as layoffs in tech sector continue to mount in 2023. In January alone, tech giants such as Google and Microsoft announced combined 22,000 layoffs.
Reports say that Apple is getting rid off contractors instead of waiting for contracts to renew (happens every 12-15 months).
According to a New York Post report, one contractor claimed to have been blindsided, saying Apple management had assured him that all jobs were safe.
Apple’s contractor workforce is in thousands.
A source had told BW Businessworld in December 2022 that Apple had not hired aggressively unlike other tech companies, which meant that tech layoffs would not affect the Cupertino-based company.
In an interview earlier this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that he views layoffs as a last resort but didn’t rule out its possibility entirely. He further said that he wants to manage costs in other ways and acknowledged that Apple was cutting costs as well.
“We’re cutting hiring, we’re being very prudent and deliberate on people that we hire,” Cook had said.
