Amazon has reduced its workforce by approximately 180 positions in its games division. This is the second round of layoffs for the online retail and digital streaming giant in less than a week, as part of a larger restructuring initiative revealed in an email examined by Reuters on Monday.
In an email dated 13 November, Christoph Hartmann, Vice President of Amazon Games, stated that following an earlier restructuring in April, it became clear that a more concentrated allocation of resources towards areas exhibiting significant growth potential was required for the business to advance.
The affected employees were notified of their roles' elimination on Monday morning, marking the second workforce reduction in the games division this year. Furthermore, layoffs in Amazon's streaming music and podcast segment occurred last week, as did a small number of layoffs in the People Experience and Technology (PXT) human resources unit.
Amazon previously reduced approximately 100 positions within the games unit in April. Despite these adjustments, the company's third-quarter net income exceeded analysts' expectations, and its revenue forecast for the fourth quarter of the year is in line with projections.
